Vinevine’s Hundred Steps merges elements of Taiwanese Indigenous culture with contemporary fantasy. The work draws inspiration from the Pokémon character “Snivy” (Vinevine Snake in Mandarin) and the revered “Hundred-Pacer” viper found in the myths of the Bunun and Paiwan peoples. In these cultures, the hundred-pacer symbolizes ancestral guardianship and the deep wisdom of the mountains. Snivy’s graceful and composed nature becomes an imaginative extension of this spiritual force.
At the center of the carving lies a sleeping child, representing innocence and the convergence of dreams and ancestral presence. The headdress, blending snake motifs with anime aesthetics, suggests a dialogue between traditions and evolving identities. Draped geometric patterns echo traditional Paiwan weaving, embodying the memory and symbolism of tribal heritage.
Crafted from natural camphor wood, the sculpture preserves the organic wood grain and features a soft, earthy palette, emphasizing the warmth and subtlety of hand-carved texture. Through this dreamlike journey, viewers are invited to rediscover the richness of Taiwan’s cultural diversity, allowing tradition and popular culture to engage in a profound, resonant exchange.
