Preface
Text / Wen Jui TSAO
Artistic creation is a profound expression of the human soul. A truly compelling artwork must possess the power to move the spirit—its visual language and emotional resonance must be capable of reaching deep into the viewer’s inner world, stirring a sense of spiritual awakening.
The spirit of contemporary art lies in its ability to examine and document the multifaceted nature of our world and the challenges it faces. Through diverse materials and modes of expression, it strives to articulate a state of “truth”—one that paradoxically encompasses a hidden layer of “falseness” within what is perceived as “true.”
We live in a world governed by relativity. The movement of celestial bodies and the balance of the natural environment that sustains all life reflect this principle. As the Bible says, “All things work together for good,” and Buddhist teachings on karma emphasize the cycle of cause and effect—both of which articulate the concept of relative truth.
Inspired by this notion of relativity, I use it as a core idea in my work to explore the relationships between people, between humans and objects, and between humanity and the environment. From this thematic foundation, I further delve into sub-themes such as desire, reality, and illusion.
Heart and Sea: A Meeting
Text / His Chi WU – 2017, Yilan
At the end of April 2016, I relocated my studio to Dali Fishing Village in Toucheng Township, Yilan County—marking the most significant move in over a decade. I transitioned from a mountainous, enclosed environment in Puli to a life surrounded by sea and mountains. This shift in setting offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on my painting practice. With new surroundings came new sensations, which naturally gave rise to different visual expressions and rhythms.
Creating and living by the sea is both joyful and fulfilling. Although the intense sun and humidity can be overwhelming, the vibrant, highly saturated light is utterly captivating. Most importantly, there is the vast, healing expanse of the ocean. In my 2016 works, high-chroma color, simplicity, and floating forms began to emerge—these are the visual expressions born from life by the sea.
