Between Fiction and Reality – On Wen Jui TSAO’s Paintings of the Virtual and the Real

Humanity has always been fascinated by the exploration of future worlds, as seen in the many fantastical narratives portrayed in science fiction films. Among them, Hollywood’s 1999 release The Matrix stood out as a groundbreaking work of its time, setting a new benchmark for the genre. The film’s intricate plot, action-packed special effects, and philosophical reflections on fate, life, and death infused the narrative with a rich blend of philosophy, aesthetics, science, and theology. The concept of a virtual program—“The Matrix”—portrayed in the movie foreshadowed what we now recognize as the “metaverse,” a blurred realm between reality and illusion.
As humanity transitioned from the 20th to the 21st century, many of those dreams and fantasies began to shape the possibilities of the future. This brings to mind the work of Wen Jui TSAO, whose paintings construct and depict immersive virtual worlds.

人類對於未來世界的探索，向來充滿了好奇感，這可以從各類不同科幻電影中看到許多幻想情節的發展，而1999年由好萊塢推出的科幻電影《駭客任務》（The Matrix）無疑在當年是這類前衛影片的翹楚而引領時代風騷。不管是電影本身故事劇情、動作特效，還有牽涉到眾多人與時代命運及生死抉擇，都含有濃郁的哲學、美學、科學、神學的神秘色彩，其中所提及虛擬程式的「母體」世界，就是現今發展的「元宇宙」虛與實空間概念。當然人類從20世紀跨越到21世紀，當年許多的夢想或幻想也成為未來可能性的發展，這讓我聯想起曹文瑞的創作，他營造虛擬世界的繪畫作品。
