The Dance of Radiance – Entering the Creative World of RAN HILL

Light seems to be inseparably intertwined with human life. The sun’s radiance nurtures all living things, and the biological rhythms of Earth’s creatures are shaped by the cycles of sunlight that accompany our planet’s orbit. It is no surprise, then, that humans are inherently fascinated by light. Imagine a world devoid of illumination—like the polar “long night” in the Arctic and Antarctic, where sunlight is absent for months—revealing a landscape cloaked in cold and darkness. On the other hand, light symbolizes positivity, hope, and anticipation. This connection brings to mind the work of RAN HILL, whose creations are consistently associated with “light.” His paintings often emit a radiant glow, establishing a distinctive visual style and poetic atmosphere unique to his art.
RAN HILL has said, “Through my art, I document life as well as my understanding of artistic creation. My inspiration comes from inner reflection, from my contemplation and observation of the people, events, and things around me.” His earliest artistic awakening came from the works of renowned Russian surrealist Marc Chagall (1887–1985), whose original paintings he encountered in Japan and found deeply moving and inspirational. RAN HILL believes Chagall’s art is infused with energy drawn from hope and love.
He also admires Japanese artist Naohisa Inoue, known for his collaboration with Hayao Miyazaki on Whisper of the Heart and for his dreamlike “Iblard” worlds—utopian landscapes brimming with fantasy. RAN HILL recalls Inoue as a humble artist who generously shares his ideas and techniques, from whom he gained immense inspiration and encouragement.

光似乎與人類生命息息相關，太陽的光源蘊育著萬物生息，使地球上生物受到日照週期影響，隨著地球公轉產生生物時鐘的循環。人類對光會產生好奇，自不意外；設想如果這個世界少了光的照亮，最顯明例子就像地球南北極長達半年缺乏陽光照射的“極夜”，將會顯現多麼黑暗冰冷的世界，另一方面光代表著正向的光明面，令人有期盼與希望；這讓我聯想到海至的創作一直跟“光”產生關聯，他的繪畫創作往往在畫面上散發出發光體的感覺，也形成他個人作品獨特的風格與韻味。
海至說：「我用創作記錄生活，也記錄自己對藝術創作的認知。我的靈感來自於內心的省思，對週遭人、事、物體認與沉澱下的發想。」他最早繪畫創作的重要啟蒙是來自於俄國知名超現實畫家夏卡爾 (Marc Chagall，1887 ~ 1985)，當時他在日本時看到原作深受震撼與感動，海至認為夏卡爾在畫作裡注入了希望與愛的能量。另外他欣賞日本藝術家井上直久，從其與宮崎駿合作的心之谷動畫，他畫作中的伊巴拉德世界，是一個充滿夢想的烏托邦，跟他接觸覺得是一個謙虛又不吝嗇分享想法與畫法的前輩，也因此從中受到很多的啟發和鼓勵。
