Metaphor and Dependence – Recent Works by Kuo Wei LIN

Kuo Wei LIN’s color-coated steel sculptures, which combine animals with female figures, certainly carry an intentional sweetness and charm. He often chooses to depict either adorable, cool-spirited little girls or curly-haired beauties with voluminous locks. Bold applications of red, gold, and silver further lend these figurative sculptures a slightly kitschy, sugary appeal. Yet beyond their visual allure, they subtly convey more complex messages.
Animals have long held a significant place in human society. Nearly every aspect of human life—food, clothing, shelter, transportation, education, and entertainment—involves animals in some form, and art is no exception. From the animals in ancient cave paintings linked to ritual and mysticism, to mythological creatures in sacred texts, from the horses, hunting dogs, and lapdogs of classicism reflecting human behavior and social order, to the wild animals of Romanticism symbolizing nature, and finally to contemporary depictions of pets or the caged beasts of zoos and circuses—animals have always served as potent symbols.
Kuo Wei LIN’s animal selections are equally diverse: from domesticated pets like poodles and huskies, to regional or endangered wildlife such as the Formosan hare, Tibetan yak, and polar bear, and to symbolic creatures associated with astrology or wealth such as lions, rams, and golden pigs. Through these choices, Kuo Wei LIN attempts to portray the multifaceted and deeply entangled relationship between humans and animals.

林國瑋結合動物與女性人物的上色鋼雕,固然有他甜美可人的意圖:例如他總是選擇耍酷的可愛小女孩,或是髮量豐沛的捲髮美女作為再現的對象;又例如他總是大膽的刷上紅色、金色、銀色,使這些具象的雕塑帶著些許甜膩俗豔的氣息;但在視覺吸引力之外,依然透露著些許微妙的訊息。
在人類社會中動物本來就佔有一席之地,人類的食衣住行育樂幾乎都離不開動物,藝術亦然。從洞窟壁畫裡作為神秘巫術遺跡的動物,到神話與典籍中作為神喻或寓意的動物,到古典主義中那些反映人類生活習性與社會狀態的戰馬、獵犬及家犬,到浪漫主義裡那些影射大自然的野生動物,再到當代藝術家喜歡呈現的寵物,以及動物園與馬戲團裡的困獸。林國瑋選擇的動物也不一而足:從貴賓、哈士奇等寵物狗,到臺灣野兔、西藏氂牛、北極熊等區域性野生動物或瀕危動物,到獅子、牡羊、金豬等與星座或財富相關的象徵性動物,林國瑋試圖展現動物與人類關係那複雜多元的面貌。
