May 18 - May 29, 2019
Contemporary Abstract Art of Taiwan Exhibition – Hidden Vision II
This exhibition, Hidden Vision II, showcases the work of eight mid-generation Taiwanese artists born between 1970 and 1979: Liu Wen-De, Wu Yin-Hai, Wang Kung-Tse, Tai Chia-Ju, Lo Jui-Lin, Hsu Kuo-Yu, Ko Wei-Kuo, and Chao Lu-Chia. These artists have not followed prevailing artistic trends nor have they conformed to the aesthetic tastes of mass culture. Instead, they have steadfastly chosen the transcendent path of abstract painting—infusing their works with personal introspection, philosophical reflection, and deeply felt experiences of nature, life, and self-cultivation. Through this, they redefine the relationship between abstract language and their own artistic intentions.
Liu Wen-De embraces a poetic and contemplative dialogue with both nature and the self. His work reveals the depth of a literati spirit—rich in emotional resonance, tinged with gentle melancholy, and grounded in mindful detachment.
Wu Yin-Hai explores the rising and falling of inner thoughts, journeying inward toward self-cultivation and ultimate metaphysical awareness. His intuitive calligraphic compositions distill the spiritual essence of the present moment with clarity and precision.
Wang Kung-Tse examines the interconnection of emotion and space, repeatedly probing the relationship between life and time. The traces of hand-drawn measurements and temporal divisions express the dynamic rhythm of living nature.
Tai Chia-Ju’s paintings emerge from a state of self-forgetting—a gaze turned inward and upward. Her works generate an elusive visual aura, impossible to focus on, yet constantly beckoning—evoking her spiritual pursuit of the “other shore.”
Lo Jui-Lin sees painting not merely as a record of experience, but as experience itself. Each brushstroke becomes part of a meditative process of self-realization, capturing fleeting moments of spiritual illumination.
Hsu Kuo-Yu blends dream and reality through emotional resonance. Her hazy landscapes emanate a quiet sensitivity, expressing deep feelings toward life and an earnest pursuit of ideals.
Ko Wei-Kuo constructs shifting visual fields through subtle gradations of ink dots. His compositions oscillate between clarity and ambiguity, forming new visual orders that emerge from his internal calibration and extension of perception.
Chao Lu-Chia captures fleeting emotional states and the meeting point of awareness and sensation. Through simplified color schemes, she translates lived experience into pure form, documenting moments of profound psychological activity.
Together, these eight artists transcend visible surfaces to explore realms beyond appearance. Their practices extend into personal expression and forge symbolic connections with the surrounding world. Each presents a unique vocabulary of abstract language, highlighting the ever-evolving and unpredictable nature of abstraction. Rooted in personal, cultural, and environmental experiences, their works seek the precise harmony between the material and the spiritual, demonstrating abstract painting’s ongoing capacity for transformation and expression. Through these freely developed vocabularies, they offer contemporary interpretations of literati spirit and the poetic rhythms of life.
