Give Art Some Soil—Let Us Nurture the Seeds of Our Dreams Together
Dream Space: Yon Air HSU Solo Exhibition
Art is a dream infused with the power of love—an energy that creates space for blessings, warmth, and hope to flourish and be shared.
Hui-Lan Hsu began her creative journey at the age of seven, nurturing her practice over the years through painting, calligraphy, classical music, interior design, and culinary arts. Her works reflect a synthesis of experiences: from her travels around the world to the ordinary beauty of daily life, all woven seamlessly into her artistic expression. Using the layered textures of oil paint and the semi-automated techniques of acrylics, her style evokes the spirit of Abstract Expressionism—where shape and color are used to express emotion subjectively, rather than depict the literal. Through the interaction of points, lines, forms, colors, and compositions, she invites viewers into a space of emotion, imagination, and thought.
When creating, Hsu operates from a powerful subconscious state—each stroke a release of emotion: joy, anger, sorrow, or delight. In her Dream Space, spatial depth is deliberately erased. The moon, birds, flowers, cats, plants, and houses all co-exist on a single plane—reflecting the modernist principle of flatness. Colors play across the canvas like a symphony, layered and rich with visual rhythm. Through pigments, Hsu conveys her shifting emotional states, giving life to each painting as a vibrant, independent being. Every subject in her work is a main character, representing the raw, essential nature of people and things.
In her recent explorations, Hsu has developed a technique of mixing pigments in small glass beakers. Using a combination of “drip color” techniques and brushwork, she overlays spontaneous, unstructured colors in a manner that appears wild, bold, and free. Her expressive strokes convey the beauty of speed and movement. The viewer can sense a childlike energy—unrestrained and powerful—emerging from her brush. While the paintings may not initially reveal recognizable forms, their interplay of lines and shapes gradually forms a universe of its own on the canvas.
Chinese modern writer Eileen Chang once wrote: “Perhaps every man has two women in his heart: one is a white rose—bright as moonlight by the bed; the other, a red rose—like a scarlet mole on the chest.” Hui-Lan Hsu hopes her orchids are more than just bright and gentle like moonlight. She envisions them as red roses—quietly radiant, elegant, serene, and unforgettable.
Give art some soil—and may we nurture together the seeds of our dreams and original intentions.
