Contemporary Abstract Art of Taiwan Exhibition I – Hidden Vision
Text / Curator: Wang Kung-Tse
Through the naked eye, we often remain on the surface of things; only through the mind’s eye can we penetrate appearances and glimpse the hidden vision beyond.
⸻
Abstract art has developed for over a century. Its history is often broadly categorized into “cold abstraction” and “hot abstraction.” While abstract art may no longer be the dominant trend in contemporary global art, it continues to shine in the 21st-century art world. Artists around the world are still expanding its vocabulary and boundaries through new perspectives and techniques, producing richly diverse visual expressions. Abstraction has become a classic and enduring form within the language of art.
Taiwan’s abstract art incorporates elements of its own cultural aesthetics, evolving into unique modes of expression. Contemporary Abstract Art of Taiwan Exhibition I – Hidden Vision presents the works of eight mid-generation Taiwanese artists: Wang Wei-He, Ko Ying-Ping, Kao Chi-Wei, His Chi Wu, Chang Fu-Chun, Huang Chiu-Yueh, Ko Shih-Chung, and Hsu Shih-Fang. With a global perspective and strong individual voices, each artist has developed their own creative language—revealing the multifaceted landscape of contemporary Taiwanese abstraction.
⸻
Wang Wei-He draws from a spiritual alignment that transcends the structure of daily life. His intuitive sense and philosophical insight seek to touch the eternal, elusive rhythms of nature and the cosmos.
Hsu Shih-Fang explores the interplay of spirit and matter, merging thought and substance into a holistic artistic philosophy—reaching a harmonious unity between self and world.
His Chi Wu travels fluidly between the natural world and inner awareness, exploring the relationship between humanity and the environment. Within the vanishing pulse of time, he captures the raw immediacy of emotion.
Ko Ying-Ping composes abstract calligraphic rhythms through free-flowing brushwork—constructing poetic, imagined landscapes born from inner nature.
Chang Fu-Chun’s automatic writing employs a distinctly Eastern, introspective approach to abstraction, conveying a world both lyrical and sensorial.
Ko Shih-Chung blends his deep connection to the land with lyrical abstraction, fusing reason and emotion into a form that reveals the spiritual links between life and all things.
Kao Chi-Wei leans toward the minimalist language of color field painting. His works capture fleeting emotional impressions and transform them into musical rhythms of brushstroke and tone.
Huang Chiu-Yueh transforms the outer world into an inner vision, using organic combinations of shape, color, and texture to record life and express direct, heartfelt emotion—like a drifting poem.
⸻
Each of these eight artists reveals a unique abstract language rooted in personal experience and exploration. Hidden Vision offers a powerful entry point into the diverse expressions of abstract art in Taiwan—a profound aesthetic journey and a rich, soul-stirring artistic feast.
